Hey, I’m Thorsten. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I’ve been calling Vienna home for the past 10 years, but I grew up in a small town in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. I enjoy the peace of rural life but also the excitement of city living, where there’s always a new restaurant to try or an event to experience. I originally came here to pursue my Master’s and earned a Master’s degree in Business Informatics from the University of Vienna, where I got my first taste of machine learning, like gradient descent, and semantic web technologies, like RDF. Over time, the city grew on me, and now I truly enjoy my life here.

Currently, I work as a data engineer at ORF, where I’m working to transform the way the organization handles data. I’m involved in designing the data platform, establishing data governance guidelines, and acting as an evangelist to promote our new way of working. I have experience working with Python, SQL, PySpark, and I enjoy experimenting with newer tools like DuckDB, dbt, and dltHub. In general, I’m eager to understand how technologies work, regardless of who is hosting or providing them. I believe every solution has its place and excels at different tasks. It’s like everything in engineering: your choice depends on your requirements.

Besides work, I love traveling. South America has been my favorite trip so far, where I hiked through Torres del Paine, explored the silver mines in Potosí, and tackled the Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu. When I’m not traveling, you’ll likely find me hiking, cycling, or singing karaoke. Oh, and if you’re up for geeking out about Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Dragon Ball, Pokémon, or One Piece, let me know!
